A biostratigraphical correlation has been made in Yugoslavia relating to two main areas: the of development of the Tortonian from the Parathetys in the north and the area of the Thetys in the south. On the basis of planktonic foraminiferal species, which are unevenly represented in the investigated areas, two biozones have been identified. Candorbulina universa zone is well developed in the Lower Tortonian while the Globigerina bulloides zone is represented in the Upper Tortonian. The rest of the Tortonian zones have been identified on the basis of the benthonic Foraminifera.
The calcareous nannoplankton of the Tortonian sediments from the Parathethe basis of the benthonic Foraminifera.
