  • Resumen
    • The present status of the study of Cenozoic planktonic foraminifera is briefly reviewed and a statement of principles set out. The attainable aims are: (1) documentation of all taxa, including studies of taxa from the Recent, naming and recording the stratigraphic ranges of species and their paleogeographic distribution and diversity changes; (2) interpretation of inter-taxonomic relationships in order to produce a phylogenetic classification; (3) accurate inter-regional biostratigraphic correlation. In order to achieve these aims the following recommendations are made: (1) Standard zonal schemes should be erected for three regions:

      (a) Tropical-subtropical (b) Boreal and (c) Austral belts, the three belts being separated by arbitrary boundaries at latitudes 30°N. and 30°S.; (2) Working parties should be set up within the framework of the UNESCO International Geological Correlation Programme to work within the three latitudinal belts; (3) Eventually most of the co-ordinating work and new ideas will depend on a few leaders but in order to maintain the enthusiasm of planktonic foraminiferal study, younger micropaleontologists should be included within the proposed working groups.
