Los retos del sistema sanitario a la luz de la transición demográfica

    En este artículo se presentan los retos del sistema sanitario español ante la transición demográfica. Esta se caracteriza por el en - vejecimiento progresivo de la población, el aumento de la tasa de dependencia, la baja tasa de natalidad y la alteración de los flujos migratorios. De este modo, la transición de- mográfica repercute en la salud poblacional intensificando la transición epidemiológica hacia las enfermedades no transmisibles y asociadas al envejecimiento. Hay cuatro gran- des desafíos que el sistema sanitario ha de enfrentar ante la transición demográfica. El primero es el envejecimiento saludable, con especial atención al papel de la prevención.

    Este es el reto central del sistema sanitario, pues condiciona la intensidad de uso de los recursos y servicios sanitarios y la financiación del propio sistema. El segundo reto es afron- tar las consecuencias del cambio climático sobre la salud. El tercero es la correcta orga- nización y coordinación de los sistemas sani- tario y sociosanitario, adaptando la oferta de recursos (materiales y humanos) a las nuevas necesidades de la población, y mejorando la gestión y coordinación. Por último, el cuarto reto es atender a las nuevas necesidades de financiación del sistema sanitario derivadas del cambio demográfico. Termina el artículo con un apartado de síntesis y propuestas

    This article presents the challenges facing the Spanish healthcare system in the face of the demographic transition.

    This is characterized by the progressive aging of the population, an increase in the dependency rate, low birth rates and alteration of migratory flows. It has an impact on population health, intensifying the epidemiological transition towards non- communicable diseases associated with aging.

    There are four major challenges that the healthcare system must face in the face of the demographic transition. The first is healthy aging, with special attention to the role of prevention. This is the central challenge facing the healthcare system, as it conditions the intensity of use of healthcare resources and services and the financing of the system itself. The second challenge is to address the consequences of climate change on health.

    The third is the correct organization and coordination of the health and social and healthcare systems, adapting the supply of resources (material and human) to the new needs of the population, and improving management and coordination. Finally, the fourth challenge is to meet the new financing needs of the healthcare system arising from demographic change. The article ends with a section on synthesis and proposals
