    Que “imagen” sea aquí, cuando leemos, una palabra antes que una imagen; y que lo sea con tal naturalidad que sin traspié podamos comenzar con palabras y sin imagen para la imagen; que desde la partida tengamos sólo palabras para la imagen que abandonamos, o que solo retenemos expropiada en la palabra; que al instante de ser vista la imagen decline profiriendo algo, una acción, un hecho, un objeto, cualquier cosa menos una imagen, encriptándose su acontecimiento, su cuerpo, su multiplicidad tras el celofán del discurso; que regularmente articulemos la imagen bajo una diegesis narrativa, y que solo en ese rigor la veamos; que se llegue a decir “nuestros ojos, nuestras palabras”, en fin, todo ello habla, antes que nada, del señorío que sobre la imagen ejerce la palabra. Deshacer la trama de esa subordinación constituye el desafío poético y político del cine de Ruiz, y que en este texto exponemos desde uno de sus bordes.

    That “image” is here, as we read, a word rather than an image; and that it seems so natural that without stumbling we can begin with words and without an image for the image; that from the start we only have words for the image that we abandon, or that we only retain expropriated in the word; that the instant it is seen the image declines into an utterance, an action, a fact, an object, anything but an image, encrypting its event, its body, its multiplicity behind the cellophane of discourse; that we regularly articulate the image under a narrative diegesis, and that we are only able to see it in that stiffness; that it is possible to say “our eyes, our words”, and so on; all of this speaks first and foremost, of the rule of the word over the image. To undo the plot of this subordination is the poetic and political challenge of Ruiz’s cinema which this text presents from one of its edges.
