Spanish adaptations of English loaned words in two compared Spanish varieties

    Puerto Rico y Santa Cruz son territorios americanos muy cercanos; sin embargo, el español y el inglés juegan un papel diferente. En PR, el español es el idioma oficial del país, mientras que el inglés se enseña y se aprende como segundo idioma oficial. Por otra parte, el inglés es el idioma oficial de las Islas Vírgenes, pero el español en Santa Cruz se habla opcionalmente como segundo idioma. No obstante, ambas variedades del español han sido tremendamente influenciadas por el inglés, especialmente en el léxico, y los aspectos del préstamo y uso de palabras derivadas del inglés dentro del español hablado en ambas islas merecen más investigación. El objetivo general de este estudio es brindar una contribución a los campos del bilingüismo y de la lingüística de contacto ofreciendo conocimientos actuales sobre las circunstancias lingüísticas del español tal como se habla en Puerto Rico y en Santa Cruz.

    Puerto Rico and Saint Croix are US territories and are a few miles apart from each other; however, Spanish and English play a different role in each one. In PR, Spanish is the country’s official language while English is taught and learned as an official second language. In contrast, English is the official language across the Virgin Islands, but Spanish in St. Croix is optionally spoken as a second language. Nonetheless, both Spanish varieties have been tremendously influenced by English, especially in the lexicon, and aspects of the borrowing and use of English-derived words within the Spanish spoken on both islands deserve further research. The overall objective of this study is to provide a contribution to the fields of bilingualism and contact linguistics by offering current knowledge on the linguistic circumstances of Spanish as it is spoken in Puerto Rico and St. Croix.
