Hierápolis, Atenas e Roma: a retórica geográfica e a segunda sofística

    This work presents the geographic thought of Lucian of Samosta in the context of the second sophistic as a mean of a rhetorical construction of praise and blame related to centers of the Roman Empire. Lucian weighs and debates the discourse instigated by cities like Athens, Rome and the neighbor to his native city of Samosata, Hierapolis, or “Holy City”, according to the model of the epideictic discourse. Hence, we try to investigate how topics related to cities, travel and geography reflect in the formation of Lucian’s epideictic discourse as a means to confront and challenge the great issues that beset his generation. This paper, therefore, shall explore how Lucian constructs the map of the empire and situates himself within it, paying attention to its characterization of cities, and especially the epistemic hubris generated by the cultural intersections of the empire.

    Este trabalho apresenta o pensamento geográfico de Luciano de Samósata no contexto da Segunda Sofística, como meio de uma construção retórica do elogio e do vitupério relacionados a centros do Império Romano. Luciano pesa e avalia o discurso instigado por cidades como Atenas, Roma e a vizinha à sua cidade natal de Samósata, Hierápolis, ou “Cidade Santa”, segundo o modelo do discurso epidítico. Assim, procura-se investigar de que maneira temas associados às cidades, às viagens e à geografia refletem na formação do discurso de Luciano, enquanto meio para confrontar e desafiar as grandes questões que atribulavam sua geração. Deve-se, portanto, explorar como Luciano constrói o mapa do Império e se situa dentro deste, prestando atenção à sua caracterização de cidades, e especialmente à húbris epistêmica gerada pelas intersecções culturais do Império.
