    Desde su fundación en el año 1483 y durante la práctica totalidad de la Edad Moderna la villa de Puerto Real contó con dos formas de gobierno: bien siendo sus máximas autoridades dos alcaldes, elegidos de entre sus regidores y vecinos (tal como dispusieron los Reyes Católicos en su carta puebla), o bien asumiendo esta función de gobierno los corregidores, figura impuesta en ciertos periodos tanto por la Corona como por la familia Díaz Pimienta cuando la villa estuvo bajo su jurisdicción (1646-1676). El presente artículo estudia la figura del corregidor en la villa de Puerto Real entre los años 1572 y 1614, algo más de cuatro décadas en las cuales la Corona designó que ésta fuera la máxima autoridad en ella. Se analiza este cargo tanto a nivel general como observando casos concretos, aportando la nómina completa de los corregidores que ejercieron en la villa durante este periodo, finalizando con los motivos que originaron la vuelta al gobierno de alcaldes a partir del año 1614.

    Since its foundation in the year 1483 and during practically all of the Modern Age, the town of Puerto Real had two forms of government: either its highest authorities being two mayors, chosen from among its aldermen and neighbors (as ordered by the Catholic Monarchs in its foundation document), or the “corregidores” assuming this function of government, a figure imposed in certain periods both by the Crown and by the Díaz Pimienta family when the town was under their jurisdiction (1646-1676). This article studies the figure of the “corregidor” in the town of Puerto Real between the years 1572 and 1614, a little over four decades in which the Crown designated him as the highest authority in it. This position is analyzed both at a general level and observing specific cases, providing the complete list of “corregidores” who worked in the town during this period, ending with the reasons that led to the return to the government of mayors from the year 1614.
