    El siglo XX ha terminado por ser en buena medida el siglo americano. Porque, en efecto, por su poderío económico y militar, por su creatividad tecnológica y cultural, por las responsabilidades mundiales del país, por los valores últimos en que se fundamenta la sociedad norteamericana, Estados Unidos acabarían hegemonizando el siglo. Este artículo se centra sobre todo en la paradoja que supone que hegemonía mundial, afluencia económica e hipermodernidad hayan generado en la sociedad norteamericana un clima de malestar moral, de neurosis colectiva, con manifestaciones extraordinarias: problemas raciales, bolsas de pobreza, criminalidad...     The XXth century has been often described as the American Century. Economic growth, military might, technological and scientific superiority, cultural creativity, combined to make the U.S.A. the first world superpower after 1945. This article argues that te U.S.A. are somehow lite a metaphor of contemporaly world. On the one hand, the U.S.A. became the ideal type of an open, democratic society. On the other hand, world hegemony, economic affluence and hyperniodemity seem to have created a climate of moral malaise, of collective neurosis, as exemplified by racial problems, poverty, juvenil delincuency aud the many problems that hunted America through the century.
