Resumen de Os “Retornados” de África – Integração na Madeira (1974-1977)

  A descolonização portuguesa em África, após o 25 de Abril de 1974, deu origem ao maior êxodo de portugueses de que há memória, e a um dos maiores da Europa, no contexto das migrações de retorno pós-coloniais. Estima-se que Portugal tenha recebido, entre os anos de 1974 e 1976, cerca de meio milhão de pessoas provenientes das ex-colónias, comummente designados como “retornados”. Entre estes, calcula-se que oito mil tenham vindo para a Madeira.O presente artigo analisa os percursos de vida de um grupo de retornados chegados ao território madeirense, através do relato das suas vivências pessoais, procurando compreender como decorreu o seu processo de integração.Os resultados indicam que a família foi a principal base de acolhimento dos retornados, que ficaram inicialmente alojados em casa destes. Foi possível apurar também a existência de apoio institucional feito pela autarquia de Machico e do Instituto de Apoio ao Retorno de Nacionais (IARN). As principais dificuldades de integração foram sobretudo a nível económico e cultural, superadas através do regresso à vida ativa: trabalho e/ou estudos. Apesar do drama vivido e das grandes dificuldades experienciadas, a integração dos retornados entrevistados decorreu sem perturbação social, considerando os mesmos estarem plenamente integrados na sociedade madeirense.

  The Portuguese decolonization in Africa, after 25 April 1974, gave rise to the largest exodus of Portuguese in memory, and one of the largest in Europe, in the context of postcolonial return migrations. It is estimated that between 1974 and 1976 Portugal received about half a million people from the former colonies, commonly referred to as “returnees”. Of these, it is estimated that eight thousand have come to Madeira.The present article analyzes the life paths of a group of returnees who arrived in Madeiran territory, through the reporting of their personal experiences, trying to understand how their integration process proceeded.The results indicate that the family was the main base of reception of the returnees, who were initially housed in their home. It was also possible to verify the existence of institutional support made by the municipality of Machico and the Institute for Support to the Return of Nationals (IARN). The main difficulties of integration were mainly economic and cultural, overcome by the return to active life: work and / or studies. Despite the drama experienced and the great difficulties experienced, the integration of returnees interviewed took place without social disruption, considering that they were fully integrated in Madeiran society.
