This article summarizes the evolution of modern Catalan from the founding in 1907 of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans, the body that subsequently undertook the codification of the language, led by Pompeu Fabra, to the 21st century. The broadening of the field of research branching from the study of Catalan requires a corresponding broadening of the meaning of “Catalanistics” as applied to studies of all aspects of the Països Catalans. The article provides a new definition, used in the articles on the future of Catalan in this issue of the Catalan Review.
