  • Resumen
    • One of the major challenges for scholars of Catalan Studies in the North American academy is to find a dedicated and durable place for the field. Most of the work done relies on the voluntary commitment of individuals whose dedication to the study of Catalan culture is rarely considered an essential component of the academic units in which they have been appointed, which are usually departments or programs of Spanish where hegemonic traditions and practices for which the study of other literatures and cultures of the Iberian Peninsula is not a primary concern. Thus, finding the appropriate institutional location for the practice — the teaching and scholarship — of Catalan Studies is an essential step toward the recognition and consolidation of the discipline. In contrast to Hispanism, Iberian Studies offers an opportunity to advance in this direction, because of its willingness to establish non-hegemonic relations among various languages and cultures, and because it is predicated on a series of epistemological assumptions that make the study of Catalan matters a necessary constituent for the production of knowledge.
