  • Resumen
    • Development of New Zealand Tertiary Stages is described and illustrates an increasing use of foraminifera in the definition and identification of stages. Recently, foraminiferal zonal schemes have been developed independently of the stages: the relationship of the stages to zones is discussed and a further division of the Neogene into subzones, based on planktonic foraminiferal taxa, is presented. Six biostratigraphic criteria used for defining planktonic foraminiferal zonal boundaries are placed in a preferred order of reliability when used for correlation. The present positions of the major Tertiary boundaries are reviewed.
