Resumen de Maestrichtian (late Cretaceous) Foraminifera from a deep-sea core off Southwestern Africa

Ruth Todd

  • A deep-sea core from the flank of Walfisch Ridge contains in its lower part a 290-cm section of Maestrichtian age. A rich fauna of smaller Foraminifera, chiefly planktonic kinds, is dominated by Heterohelix globulosa, Globigerina (Rugoglobigerina) rugosa, and Globotruncana arca. One species is described as new: Globotruncana walfischensis. The accompanying benthonic assemblage contains 45 species. Paleoecologic indications are that the deposit was laid down at a somewhat shallower depth than its present depth of more than 4000 meters.
