    En su novela alegórica en tres partes, Gracián calca las edades de la vida sobre las cuatro estaciones del año y las etapas geográficas del curso vital de los héroes. Ofrece la paradoja de un primer tomo abarcando «primavera» y «estío», recalcando la disparidad de edades entre el varón otoñal, Critilo, que parece fuera del padrón temporal inicial, y el mozo primaveral Andrenio, el único que, en adelante, estará al parecer en adecuación coherente con las estaciones del año y de la vida. Se intenta mostrar cómo, partiendo de la vaga mención histórica de «el católico Filipo» y un juego de analepsis, relatos retrospectivos que rompen la secuencia cronológica, Gracián, acorde con los cánones de las edades de su época, hace concordar sus héroes dispares con las estaciones de la vida. En consonancia con la lógica geográfica del itinerario de esta novela abstracta, se confirma aquí la coherencia crono-lógica de las edades en el recorrido espacio-temporal.

    In his three-part allegorical novel, Graciántraces the ages of life over the four seasons of the year and the geographical stages of the heroes' life course. He offers the paradox of a first volume covering "spring" and "summer", emphasising the disparity of ages between the autumnal male Critilo, who seems to be outside the initial temporal pattern, and the springtime boy Andrenio, the only one who, from now on, will seem to be in coherent accordance with the seasons of the year and of life. An attempt is made to show how, starting from the vague historical mention of "the Catholic Philip" and a game of analepsis, retrospective accounts that break the chronological sequence, Gracian, in accordance with the canons of the ages of his time, matches his disparate heroes with the seasons of life. In keeping with the geographical logic of the itinerary of this abstract novel, the chronological coherence of the ages in the spatio-temporal journey is confirmed here
