A cidade de São Paulo musa do modernismo brasileiro e as influências desse movimento nas artes do século XX

    The Modernist Movement that emerged in São Paulo in 1922, recently completed 100 years. However, for Antonio Candido it was not just a literary movement, it was a “cultural and social movement of a very long scope” that ran throughout the 20th century “promoting the revaluation of Brazilian culture”. Being at first an avant-garde movement, it resulted in a larger project that matured from the knowledge and experimentation that were made by those involved and by others who joined them. By becoming aware of the sociocultural context of the 20s, the modernists were able to rediscover Brazil. They broke with the look shaped by the colonizer and sought the traditions of a plural country, which was not only in the metropolis of São Paulo but in the most varied confines with its mixtures and landscapes. Based on this context, our objective in this brief study is to construct a historical look at the city of São Paulo, the muse of the Modernist Movement, and to show the importance of the Movement for a reinterpretation of Brazil, yesterday and today, when we still perceive the echoes of the modernist project and the living marks of his aesthetics in various artistic fields, including the cinema that developed from the 60s onwards, Cinema Novo, also called Brazilian Modern Cinema. Thus, trying to draw lines like the streets of the city, which touch or move away, we will punctuate in time the moments in which the influence of the modernist avant-garde was stronger or weaker in the history of Brazilian literature and cinema from 1922 until today. We will use as a base the books of Antonio Candido, Ismail Xavier among others.

    O Movimento Modernista que surgiu em São Paulo em 1922, completou recentemente 100 anos. Todavia para Antonio Candido ele não foi apenas um movimento literário, foi um “movimento cultural e social de âmbito bastante longo” que percorreu todo o século XX “promovendo a reavaliação da cultura brasileira”. Sendo a princípio um movimento de vanguarda, ele resultou em um projeto maior que foi amadurecendo a partir do conhecimento e experimentação que eram feitas pelos envolvidos e por outros que a eles se juntaram. Tomando consciência do contexto sociocultural da década de XX os modernistas puderam redescobrir o Brasil. Romperam com o olhar moldado pelo colonizador e buscaram as tradições de um país plural, que não estava apenas na metrópole paulista, mas nos mais variados confins com suas misturas e paisagens. Partindo desse contexto, nosso objetivo nesse breve estudo é construir um olhar histórico sobre a cidade de São Paulo musa do Movimento Modernista e mostrar a importância do Movimento para uma releitura do Brasil, ontem e hoje, quando ainda percebemos os ecos do projeto modernista e as marcas vivas de sua estética em vários campos artísticos inclusive no cinema que se desenvolveu a partir dos anos 60, o Cinema Novo, também chamado o Cinema Moderno Brasileiro. Assim, tentando traçar linhas como as ruas da cidade, que se tocam ou se afastam, pontuaremos no tempo os momentos em que a influência da vanguarda modernista foi mais forte ou mais fraca na história da literatura e do cinema brasileiros de 1922 até os dias de hoje. Usaremos como base os livros de Antonio Candido, Ismail Xavier entre outros.
