L’évêque Alexandre d’Apamée et son église à Haouarté

    The site of Hawarte, excavated and published by P. Canivet and M. T. Fortuna Canivet, has recently revealed an underground cave dedicated to the cult of Mithra. After its destruction and filling-up, this mithraeum was replaced by a first church, which has not been precisely dated. The discovery of a new baptistery associated to this first church in Hawarte has enlightened the site’s chronology. Two inscriptions, one on the mosaic and the other on the entrance lintel, give a date of 420/421 for the construction, under bishop Alexander. The church itself is probably contemporary. The destruction of the mithraeum must have occurred shortly before.

    Le site de Haouarté, fouillé et publié par P. Canivet et M. T. Fortuna Canivet, a récemment révélé une grotte sous-jacente consacrée au culte de Mithra. Détruit et remblayé, ce mithraeum a été remplacé par la première église, qui n’était pas datée exactement. La découverte d’un nouveau baptistère rattaché à cette première église de Haouarté a permis de mieux cerner la chronologie du site. Deux inscriptions, l’une sur la mosaïque, l’autre sur le linteau d’entrée, datent la construction en 420/421, sous l’évêque d’Apamée Alexandre. L’église elle-même doit être contemporaine. La destruction du mithraeum a dû avoir lieu peu de temps auparavant.
