Resumen de Croce e Miralles interpreti della poesia omerica

Paola Volpe Cacciatore

  • This paper aims to highlight some aspects of the opinion expressed by Croce on Homeric poetry and its features which, according to him, determine a substantial difference between the Iliad and the Odyssey. On the basis of his theory about the distinction between poetry and non poetry, Croce recognizes lyric accents and expressive intensity to the Iliad, and such elements make the painful feeling of the Homeric heroes similar to the drama of the heroes of the tragedy. These aspects are not so evident in the Odyssey, whose characters do not appear as vehement and profound as the Iliadic ones. With regard to the philosopher’s thought, Paratore expresses his own perplexity, who, in addition to challenging the philological method of Croce, believes that genuine poetry should be considered not only the manifestation of impetuous passions, but also the suggestive representation of feelings such as the nostalgia of the homeland and the seductive desire to know the unknown
