Resumen de Viticultura i enologia a les Dionisíaques de Nonnos de Panòpolis

Antoni González Senmartí

  • This paper is dedicated to Mr. Carles Miralles Solà, Ph.D., professor of Greek Philology at the University of Barcelona for almost fifty years, who died prematurely when he was in full academic and poetic activity. The purpose of this work is to analyse the mythological origin of viticulture and oenology, as well as their main elements and processes, from a careful reading of the books X (verses 175-430), XI and XII of the Dionysiaca of Nonnus of Panopolis. The main core of this books is the tale of Dionysos and Ampelos, which is followed by a second narration detailing the various types of vineyards and grapes and the main tasks performed during the vintage and the subsequent winemaking process. Lastly, the origin of various terms related to the vineyard, wine and its effects, such as ‘bunch of grapes’, ‘grape’, ‘wine jar’ or ‘drunkenness’ is examined.
