Las Relaciones Geográficas del siglo XVI de Nueva España: Análisis del inédito "Mapa de Tequaltiche"

    Durante el año de 1577, el Consejo de Indias envió a América un cuestionario para que fuera respondido por parte de las autoridades indianas con una relación escrita y una pintura de la zona. Gracias a esto, disponemos hoy en día de un gran corpus documental: las Relaciones Geográficas, dentro de las que se encuentra el mapa y la relación escrita de Tequaltiche (Teocaltiche, Jalisco), una de las cabeceras de partido en la región y con gran relevancia durante la Guerra del Mixtón. Este mapa, por su reciente descubrimiento, se encuentra inédito y posee una importancia esencial para comprender la evolución histórica de los Altos de Jalisco durante el siglo xvi. La Guerra del Mixtón y su posterior “pacificación”, así como el control de la región durante la Guerra Chichimeca, marcan el contexto histórico en el que se inserta este documento. Esto, unido a que muestra hechos históricos prehispánicos, le da aún mayor importancia al mapa, ya que permite reconstruir en cierta medida el pasado de los cazcanes desde su punto de vista. En este trabajo realizaremos el análisis integral de todos los elementos que componen el documento, tanto externos como internos, de forma que podamos extraer de él la mayor cantidad de información posible.

    During the year of 1577, the Council of the Indies sent a questionnaire to America to be answered by the Indian authorities. It was sent along with a written account and a painting of the area. Thanks to this, we have today a large documentary corpus, namely the Geographical Relations, which contains the map and written relations of Tequaltiche (Teocaltiche, Jalisco), one of the regional cabeceras de partido and which had great relevance during the Mixton War. The map, due to its recent discovery, is hitherto unpublished and has an essential importance to understand the historical evolution of the Altos de Jalisco during the sixteenth century. The Mixton War and its subsequent “pacification”, as well as the control of the region during the Chichimeca War, mark the historical context in which this document is inserted. This, together with the fact that it presents the pre-Hispanic historical events, gives even greater importance to the map, since it allows to reconstruct to a certain extent the past of the Cazcanes from their point of view. In this paper, we will carry out the integral analysis of all the elements that make up the document, both external and internal, so that we can extract as much information as possible from it.
