    El artículo demuestra que la agricultura empresarial en el Bajío mexicano se consolidó gracias a nuevas tecnologías: los sistemas de irrigación y la maquinaria, que impactaron la productividad, la expansión de la frontera agrícola y la diversificación del patrón de cultivos. En este proceso fueron claves la política económica nacional y el papel del Estado como actor en la tecnificación del campo. Al mismo tiempo, las condiciones endógenas del Bajío a nivel de recursos, posición geográfica y características del entorno (suelo, clima, nivel de precipitaciones), posibilitaron rápidamente la adopción de un modelo empresarial exitoso, el cual se sustentó en la iniciativa de pequeños y medianos propietarios.

    The article shows that the consolidation of the business agriculture in the Mexican Bajío rested on new technologies: irrigation and machinery, which impacted on productivity levels, the expansion of the agricultural frontier, and the diversification of crop patterns. In this process, both national economic policy and the state’s role in fostering mechanization were crucial factors. At the same time, the Bajío’s natural resources, geographic location and environment (soil, climate, rainfall) also made possible the adoption of a successful business model, which was sustained in the initiative of small and medium owners.
