John Davis, An Early-Fourteenth-Century English Astrolabe in Milan and Contemporary Anglo-Italian Politics. Lavenham (UK): Flowton Dials, 2022. viii, 28 pp. ill. ISBN: 9781739893200.
In the last decade, John Davis authored remarkable articles on historic scientific instruments, which appeared in the SIS Bulletin of the Scientific Instrument Society and other magazines, including Nuncius. In those articles, Davis reveals a talent to investigate the material aspects of such instruments, and a preference for planispheric astrolabes. In particular, he studies their artistic and technical features, and the materials used for their manufacturing. He also applies philological diagrams (stemmas) to the different components of a single instrument or of a group of them, in order to discover their possible interconnections, provenance, maker, and, last but not least, total or partial authenticity.
