El género del cuento conjuga historia y literatura y se presta para entrar a una cultura distinta. La Unión Soviética ha sido prodigiosa en la producción de cuentos. Los ideólogos soviéticos exhortaron a los escritores a componer novelas épicas porque, según ellos, nada podría captar mejor el espíritu épico de la época. Pero muchos de los mejores autores dentro y fuera de la Unión Soviética elegieron trabajar con formas más breves. El cuento a lo largo del siglo veinte refleja, de forma fiel, la historia de la Unión Soviética.

The genre of the short story combines history and literature as a way to enter a different culture. The Soviet Union had an unusually rich production of short stories. Soviet ideologues called for writers to compose epic novels, arguing that nothing else could capture in a better way the epic spirit of the time. But many of the best authors within and outside the Soviet Union chose to work with shorter forms. The short story during the twentieth century reflects closely the history of the Soviet Union.
