Las denominadas autobiografías de cautivos son unos escritos que, en principio, cautivos y esclavos cristianos escribieron a su vuelta a la cristiandad, cuando consiguieron escapar de su cautiverio en las sociedades islámicas. Estas fuentes han sido objeto de numerosas investigaciones, pero desde enfoques diferentes que han cuestionado en mayor o menor medida su credibilidad. Entendiéndolas como egodocumentos, fruto de su contexto, nos podemos aproximar a las formas de representar esta experiencia de esclavitud, marcada por la convivencia con el islam, y a una imagen particular del mundo de la esclavitud mediterránea de los siglos XVI y XVII.

The captives’ autobiographies are writings that, in principle, Christian slaves captured and taken to Islamic societies wrote upon their return to Christianity, when they managed to escape from captivity. These sources have been the subject of numerous investigations, but from different approaches which have questioned their credibility. Understanding them as egodocuments, fruit of their context, we can approach the ways of representing this experience of slavery, marked by the coexistence with Islam, and a particular picture of the world of Mediterranean slavery in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries.
