  • Resumen
    • This essay reveals how code words for segregationist sentiments were used in the rhetoric of a 1979 referendum in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. It demonstrates the process by which themes identifiable as racist in earlier historical contexts are being invoked in sanitized forms that avoid overt references to race. It is argued that these coded messages appeal to lingering feelings of white resistance to desegretation.
