While rhetoric is often thought of in terms of Western history, ancient Indian literature is rich with contributions to the development of its own kind of rhetorical theory. Many of these ideas pre‐date Aristotle by as much as 500 years, and in their own way serve an integral and necessary role in the development of India. This paper draws together some observations about the function, scope, and style of rhetoric in ancient India.
