De Consideratione ad Eugenium Papam: un programa de re-espiritualización del pontificado

    El presente texto pretende mostrar, como contraposición a la figura del papa como Typus Moysi, el retrato del pontífice ideal que presenta Bernardo de Claraval en su escrito De Consideratione ad Eugenium Papam, escrito para Eugenio III. En él, Bernardo dibuja un retrato del papado más preocupado por el autoconocimiento y la práctica de la virtud (en línea con la tradición platónicoagustiniana) que por afirmar su autoridad sobre los poderes seculares. La virtud de la consideración es propuesta por Bernardo como un camino hacia un ejercicio de la autoridad en clave de ministerium. Un análisis del texto bernardiano muestra que, aunque participa de la tesis medieval de las dos espadas, la ubica en un contexto donde el aspecto espiritual prima frente a lo político y lo organizativo, siendo un lector más fiel de san Agustín que el llamado agustinismo político. La tesis de las dos espadas, buen reflejo de los desplazamientos del agustinismo político durante la Edad Media, encuentra así un marco interpretativo más adecuado que proporciona una alternativa a las pretensiones mostradas por Eugenio IV en su bula de 1439.

    The present paper intends to show, as a contrast to the figure of the pope as Typus Moysi, the portrait of the ideal pontiff presented by Bernard of Clairvaux in his writing De Consideratione ad Eugenium Papam, written for Eugenius III. In it, Bernard draws a portrait of the papacy more concerned with self-knowledge and the practice of virtue (in line with the Platonic-Augustinian tradition) than with asserting its authority over secular powers. The virtue of consideration is proposed by Bernardo as a path towards an exercise of authority in the key of ministerium. An analysis of the Bernardian text shows that, although he participates in the medieval thesis of the two swords, he places it in a context where the spiritual aspect prevails over the political and the organizational, being a more faithful reader of Saint Augustine than the so-called political Augustinism. The thesis of the two swords, a good reflection of the movements of political Augustinism during the Middle Ages, thus finds a more suitable interpretative framework that provides an alternative to the claims made by Eugenio IV in his bull of 1439.
