La felicità mentale e l’onesto raccontare del Decameron: Ancora su Boccaccio e l’Ethica Nicomachea

    This essay analyses some passages of the Decameron in relation to Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics and reflects upon the new light that some key issues of the philosophical treatise – together with Aquinas’ commentary and Boccaccio’s handwritten notes in manuscript A 204 Inf. of the Biblioteca Ambrosiana – can shed on the work and its theoretical background. Thanks to recent studies, we can see how Boccaccio sets up a cultural discourse that presupposes and treats themes as honesty-virtue contrasting superficial pleasure and benefit, human happiness, natural philosophy, or the theme of rationality opposed to bestiality, the importance of temperance, or the subject of friendship, or the theme of the three types of love. An onesto raccontare that resonates with a Boccaccio philosopher, with particular attention to moral philosophy, and deeply aware of the cognitive value of literature, which is increasingly diverging from the vulgata of a disengaged author.

    Il presente contributo ripercorre alcuni passi del Decameron in relazione all’Ethica Nicomachea per riflettere sulla luce che alcuni dei temi-cardine del trattato aristotelico col complemento della glossa di Tommaso e delle note boccacciane al testo nel ms. Ambrosiano A 204 Inf. possono gettare sull’opera e sul suo retroterra culturale. Grazie anche agli studi più recenti si può sempre più chiaramente mettere a fuoco come Boccaccio allestisca un discorso culturale che presuppone e tratta temi come l’onestà-virtù contrapposta al piacere superficiale e all’utile, come la felicità umana, come la filosofia naturale, o il tema della razionalità opposta alla bestialità, l’importanza della temperanza, o il tema dell’amicizia, o delle tre tipologie di amore. Un onesto raccontare in sintonia con un Boccaccio filosofo e in particolare filosofo morale ben consapevole del valore conoscitivo della letteratura e che si discosta sempre più dalla vulgata di uno scrittore che narri in modo disimpegnato.
