    This essay considers the gardens in the Decameron novelle, distinguishing three different types of them: those in which tragic love stories occur, those related to lasciviousness, and finally, those in which sovereigns take action. The analysis focuses on the last one and show how novelle X 6 and X 7 can be interpreted as a diptych.

    In these texts the kings who act as main characters, Charles of Anjou and Peter of Aragon, show their magnanimity so that virtue and honor prevail over passion. The happy ending comes together with the marriage between young people, one which reconfigure the excessive impulses that variously run through the two novelle within the perimeter of civic norms and decorum.

    Il saggio prende in considerazione i giardini presenti all’interno delle novelle del Decameron, distinguendone tre diverse tipologie: quelli in cui si consumano amori tragici, quelli legati a vicende di lascivia e infine quelli in cui agiscono dei sovrani. A questi ultimi viene dedicata un’analisi che mira a mostrare come le novelle X 6 e X 7 possano essere interpretate a dittico.

    In queste infatti i protagonisti, Carlo d’Angiò e Pietro d’Aragona, si trovano a mostrare la propria magnanimità, facendo prevalere la virtù e l’onore sulla passione. Il lieto fine è sancito dal matrimonio tra giovani, che riporta nell’alveo delle norme civili e del decoro le pulsioni eccessive che attraversano, in modi e forme diverse, le due novelle.
