Resumen de Was Bleibt: Spektrale Infrastrukturen kolonialer Extraktion im Kontext Namibias

Dieser Beitrag nimmt Kaganofs Experimentalfilm Western 4.33 (34 Min. 2002) zum Ausgangpunkt, der im Süden Namibias, in der !Namib Wüste, ehemalige Orte und Infrastrukturen der Diamantenextraktion im Kontext des deutschen Genozids an den OvaHerero und Nama in Szene setzt. Dies tut er, wie der Titel schon andeutet, auf der Ebene des Sounds als auch des Bildes und wirft dabei Fragen nach dem ‚Infra‘ in Infrastruktur auf, also dem, was der Infrastruktur unterliegt und sich unserer Wahrnehmung immer wieder entzieht. In diesem Beitrag interessieren mich die haunted places of absence einer kolonialen Infrastruktur der Extraktion und mit welchen ästhetischen Strategien diese wahrnehmbar gemacht werden sowie die von Vanessa Agard-Jones aufgeworfene Frage was der Sand erinnert.

This paper takes as its starting point Kaganof’s experimental film Western 4.33 (34 Min. 2002), which is set in southern Namibia’s !Namib Desert, in order to explore former sites and infrastructures of diamond extraction in the context of German colonialism and the genocide against the OvaHerero and Nama. The film does so, as the title suggests, on the level of sound as well as image, thereby addressing the “infra” in infrastructure and thus that which tends to escape our perception. In this paper, I am interested in the haunted sites of absence in the colonial infrastructure of extraction and in the aesthetic strategies that make them perceptible, as well as in the question raised by Vanessa Agard-Jones of what the sand remembers.
