Resumen de Perceptions of friendly insult greetings in interpersonal relationships

  • This study investigated the effects of relationship development level and sexual composition within the relationship upon perceptions of the demand relevance (acceptability and frequency) of a devious communication demand (friendly insult greetings). Acceptability and frequency increased through stranger, acquaintance, and friend levels under same‐sex conditions and increased between acquaintance and friend levels under opposite‐sex conditions. No differences were indicated between friend and intimate friend conditions. Implications of these findings within a self‐disclosure theoretical framework as well as the “cooperative principle” are discussed.
