The use of a relatively simple video‐taped training module that varies six delivery variables and two content variables is demonstrated to bring about significant changes in the ratings of speech performances by unskilled raters. The rating form used in this study reflects the reactions and perceptions of student age audiences rather than the standards of professional speech instructors. This training module could be generated by nearly any speech department and used to train beginning instructors for a number of years. Replication, using a larger sample of unskilled raters, is recommended prior to wide‐scale use.
