En la segunda mitad del siglo XVI fueron varias las cédulas reales dirigidas al corregidor de Ciudad Rodrigo, para que en la ciudad y su Tierra se fomentara la cría de caballos de casta. Con ello, la Corona quería asegurarse el suministro de estos animales para las necesidades militares. Sin embargo, la ciudad se resistió a las pretensiones de Felipe II, al considerar que la tierra no era apropiada para la cría de las yeguas, además del daño y perjuicio derivados que podían hacerse a los labradores al no poder echar sus yeguas al asno garañón.

In the second half of the sixteenth century there were several royal decrees addressed to the corregidor of Ciudad Rodrigo, so that in the city and its land the breeding of breed horses would be encouraged. With this, the Crown wanted to ensure the supply of these animals for military needs. However, the city resisted the claims Philippe II of Spain, considering that the land was not appropriate for the breeding of the mares, in addition to the damage and injury derived that could be done to the farmers by not being able to throw their mares to the jackass.
