  • Resumen
    • This chapter briefly outlines some of the main methodological approaches to studying usage-based linguistics, their development over time, and current issues in the field. To achieve the methodological goals, usage-based studies employ research methods stemming from three fields that focus on large samples of natural language data or language use and processing in real-time: corpus linguistics, psycholinguistics and variationist sociolinguistics. The chapter focuses on the contributions of these three fields to usage-based research methods, specifically on how frequency, association, and recency of use have been considered. For each field, a brief history is given, followed by current approaches in their implementation in usage-based research. In many aspects, methods from the three fields are combined, or overlap. Pending issues in usage-based methods related to these fields are outlined, and the chapter concludes with final remarks.
