  • Resumen
    • Previous studies of the effects of time‐compressed speech on comprehension lead to the tenuous conclusion that no deleterious effects occur until presentation rate exceeds 275 words per minute. However, the psychometric properties of comprehension tests used in these studies do not permit a meaningful evaluation of the levels of knowledge attained by exposure to time‐compressed speech. This paper proposes and implements a specialized measurement technique called confidence testing. The present study tested the effects of time‐compressed speech on confidence‐weighted comprehension scores. An audio‐taped informative speech was presented at rates of 140 and 275 words per minute to two groups. The results indicate both confidence‐weighted comprehension and true knowledge scores were significantly attenuated by the time‐compressed presentation.
