Notas sobre fauna urbana: características del hábitat y potenciales predadores de Iguana iguana (Squamata: Iguanidae)

    El objetivo del presente trabajo fue detectar el hábitat mayormente utilizado por la iguana verde, considerando el efecto de animales callejeros y de la degradación del paisaje, mediante una evaluación rápida en las riberas del Río Milagro del cantón Milagro, en Guayas, Ecuador. Se realizaron muestreos en cinco tramos de las riberas, para poder cuantificar las iguanas, perros y gatos callejeros. Adicionalmente, se cuantificó la disponibilidad de vegetación y se estimó la contaminación observada en varias zonas del Río Milagro. Las observaciones realizadas demuestran que las poblaciones de perros y gatos callejeros no influencian la ocurrencia de iguanas verdes; sin embargo, un numero representativo de iguanas de la localidad tienden a aglomerarse en zonas con menor contaminación y mayor vegetación disponible, áreas que coinciden con los tramos del rio más distantes del centro de la ciudad.

    The aim of this work was to detect the habitat mostly used by the green iguana, considering the effect of stray animals and landscape degradation by means of a rapid assessment on the banks of the Milagro River in the city of Milagro, Guayas, Ecuador. Several samplings were performed along five sections of the riverbanks to count the iguanas, street dogs and cats. In addition, the available vegetation and estimate the pollution observed in each section of the riverbanks of the Milagro River was quantified. The observations demonstrate that the populations of street dogs and cats do not influence the occurrence of green iguanas; however, a representative number of iguanas from the locality tends to agglomerate in areas with less pollution and more available vegetation, areas that overlap with the most distant sections of the river from the city center.
