Resumen de Some international players have a strategy in Libya, others not

Francis Ghiles

  • Nine years after removing Muammar Gaddafi different regional strategies converge in Libya:

The EU has been reduced to the role of bystander, paralysed by the conflict between Italy and France which support opposite sides in Libya. France, long a major player, has been side-lined by Russia and Turkey.

Turkey has strongly asserted its influence in the eastern and central Mediterranean, by giving military support to the Government of National Accord in Tripoli.

Russia, through the private mercenary Wagner Group, supports Khalifa Haftar, the master of Benghazi.

Algeria already missed the opportunity to influence events in Libya at the very start of the conflict. Today, the Algerian senior military brass is busy fighting its own people’s aspiration towards democracy and less corruption.
