    En la última década, la progresiva militarización de Rusia en el Ártico y la creciente actividad de su Armada, unidas a la geografía cambiante del alto norte, han propiciado que la región marítima comprendida entre Groenlandia, Islandia y el Reino Unido (conocida como GIUK Gap) haya ido recuperando la importancia estratégica que tuvo durante la Guerra Fría. El énfasis de Rusia en controlar mejor los mares que la rodean, plasmado en su última doctrina marítima, ha puesto de manifiesto la importancia para la Alianza Atlántica de fortalecer su defensa colectiva y los sistemas de alerta temprana en el flanco norte, incluyendo el GIUK Gap. Como portal entre los dos océanos, y única entrada al Ártico además del estrecho de Bering, la emergente actividad en la región y las tensiones con Moscú hacen imperante para la OTAN contar con una adecuada defensa en el Gap, brindando una capacidad de vigilancia adecuada para la creciente actividad militar de la región.

    During the last decade, Russia´s progressive militarization in the Arctic and the growing activity of its Navy, together with the changing geography of the High North, have prompted the resurgence in strategic importance of the maritime region comprising the waters between Greenland, Iceland, and the United Kingdom (known as the GIUK Gap).

    Russian emphasis in controlling its surrounding seas more thoroughly, as reflected in its latest Maritime Doctrine, have shown the importance for the Alliance to strengthen its collective defenses and early warning systems in its Northern Flank; including the GIUK Gap. As a gateway between the two oceans, and only entrance into the Arctic aside from the Bering Strait, the emerging activity in the region and tensions with Moscow have made it imperative for NATO to hold strong defenses in the Gap, which allow for an adequate surveillance against the growing military activity in the region.
