En 1938 la Barranca del Cupatitzio en Uruapan, Michoacán, se declaró parque nacional. La zona, entonces ocupada por una quinta campestre porfiriana, fue reconfigurada para crear un parque público dotado de caminos, fuentes y cenadores en aras de conservar la vegetación y convertir el espacio en un atractivo turístico. Este texto, basado en crónicas locales, fotografía histórica e informes gubernamentales, revisa los antecedentes del sitio con atención a las quintas campestres porfirianas y sus jardines, y su transformación en la etapa cardenista, en la que se les dotó de un significado totalmente distinto. Se describen a detalle las obras emprendidas y, para cerrar, se explica la relación entre estas obras y otras iniciativas de Cárdenas en Michoacán.

In 1938, the Barranca del Cupatitzio in Uruapan, Michoacán, was declared a national park. The area, then occupied by a Porfirian country estate, was reconfigured to create a public park that provided roads, fountains and gazebos, in order to preserve the vegetation and turn the space into a tourist attraction. This paper, based on local chronicles, historical photography and government reports, reviews the background of the site, paying attention to other Porfirian farmsteads and their gardens, along with their transformation during the Cardenista period, in which they were given an entirely different meaning. It describes in detail the works undertaken and, in closing, explains the relationship between these works and other initiatives of Lázaro Cárdenas in the state of Michoacan.
