Fundamento: Evaluar el impacto sanitario de los ingresos por neumonía durante 1998 en el Hospital Clínic de Barcelona. Pacientes y método: Se recogió información retrospectiva sobre las hospitalizaciones por neumonía. Resultados: En 1998 ingresaron 626 adultos con un diagnóstico principal de neumonía (el 72% tenía 65 años o más). La estancia media fue de 10 días. La mitad había tenido algún ingreso en los 5 años anteriores. Conclusiones: La frecuencia de ingresos por neumonía (17 casos por cada 1.000 hospitalizados) supone un coste correspondiente al 2,3% del coste de todos los pacientes ingresados.

Background: Impact of hospital admissions for pneumonia during 1998 in the Hospital Clínic, Barcelona. Patients and method: Retrospective information on the hospitalizations for pneumonia was collected. Results: During 1998 a total of 626 adult were admitted with a hospital diagnosis of pneumonia (72% were #>= #65 years). The average length of stay was 10 days.
