    Gil de Roma fue testigo de las convulsiones propias del fin del apogeo medieval y del inicio de la decadencia en el gótico tardío; entre los fenómenos propio de esa época está la lucha entre los señores feudales y la monarquía, trance del que saldrían fortalecidos los reyes. Los señores hallaron en la Iglesia a una aliada decidida, pero que a la postre también saldría derrotada. Gil de Roma participó en la formulación de la bula más famosa de la Edad Media: Unam sanctam (1302), la formulación más extensa de la pretensión universal del papado; pero también contribuyó a la educación política de Felipe IV de Francia, uno de los adversarios más férreos de los papas. El texto reflexiona sobre estas dos posturas aparentemente antagónicas y expone los argumentos y las motivaciones de este brillante pensador originario de Roma.

    Gil de Roma witnessed the proper convulsions of the end of the medieval apogee and the beginning of the decline in the late Gothic period; among the typical phenomena of that time is the struggle between the feudal lords and the monarchy, a trance from which the kings would emerge strengthened. The lords found a determined ally in the Church, but one who would also ultimately be defeated. Gil of Rome participated in the formulation of the most famous bull of the Middle Ages: Unam sanctam (1302), the most extensive formulation of the universal claim of the papacy; but he also contributed to the political education of Philip IV of France, one of the most staunch adversaries of the popes. The text reflects on these two apparently antagonistic positions and exposes the arguments and motivations of this brilliant thinker originally from Rome.
