    Caitrin Lynch is an anthropologist. From 2006 to 2011, she observed the daily life of a suburban Boston factory specializing in the production of steel needles. This family-run business employs workers with a median age of seventy-four. By observing and interviewing these men and women, she investigated the meaning of work for the elderly in the USA. In addition to the income it brings them, which is often a necessary supplement to their meagre pensions, Caitrin Lynch shows that work gives them both a sense of belonging to a group (membership) and of being valued (mattering). It thus enables them to escape the social marginalization to which they feel condemned, by keeping them in professional social networks.

    De 2006 à 2011, l’anthropologue Caitrin Lynch s’est immergée dans la vie quotidienne d’une usine de la banlieue de Boston spécialisée dans la production d’aiguilles en acier. Cette entreprise familiale a pour particularité d’employer des travailleurs et des travailleuses dont l’âge médian s’élève à 74 ans. En observant et en interrogeant ces femmes et ces hommes, elle a enquêté sur le sens que revêt le travail pour les personnes âgées aux États-Unis. En plus des revenus que celui-ci leur apporte et qui constituent un complément souvent nécessaire à leurs pensions bien maigres, Caitrin Lynch montre que le travail leur confère un double sentiment d’appartenance à un groupe (membership) et de valorisation (mattering). Il leur permet ainsi d’échapper à la marginalisation sociale à laquelle ils et elles s’estiment condamné·es en les maintenant dans des réseaux de sociabilité professionnels.
