Resumen
On april 18, 1894, a strong earthquake shaked the venezuelan Andes. An analysis of this shock based on reports of damages published in contemporary newspapers, pamphlets, etc., as well as, in recent papers from several authors, has permitted to re-evaluate the macroseism effects of this event. The isoseismal map does not support by itself the fact that this earthquake was originated in Bocono Fault. Nevertheless, it is evident that this spatial pattern of isoseismals is influenced by the presence of that major faulting. The principal parameters of the earthquake were calculated using standard methods, so the epicenter was located at 8.55°+ 0.05°N, 71.69°+ 0.05°W; the depth of the focus was estimated in 14 + 2 km, and its magnitude range between 7.1 and 7.4. Considering the recent seismicity near the epicentral area, the isoseismal pattern and the epicenter location, it is suggested the possibility that this earthquake took place in a faulting different from Bocono Fault. Instead, it is proposssed that another large fault located at the northwestern foot of the range, as the Piedemonte Fault or other thrust faulting recently detected in this area were the responsible for this earthquake.
