  • Resumen
    • In June, 1966 the Compania Shell de Venezuela requested its holding company the consideration of a 0,1 g seismic factor in the analysis of the protection dikes of the Costa Bolivar (now Costa Oriental) of lake Maracaibo. This was the beginning of the earthquake geotecnical engineering in the oil industry in Venezuela. Thirty years later the Venezuela oil industry-through INTEVEP and its operating companies -has established as a norm the need to evaluate the seismic risk in its critical facilities. A project was initiated in 1991, coordinated by INTEVEP, with the purpose of evaluating the above mentioned seismic risk, designing the corresponding mitigative measures and implementing adequate contingency plans. This paper present a brief historical summary of the development of earthquake geotechnical engineering, a discipline relatively new worldwide, in Venezuela and, in particular, in the Venezuela oil industry, as well as its present state of knowledge.
