Counterurbanization involves a flow of people migrating from urban to rural spaces and bringing with them new social and spatial relationships. However, little attention has been paid to the role that neo-rural inhabitants attribute to the countryside as a space for children-rearing. This research tries to fill this gap by analyzing the parenting practices displayed by mothers who have recently arrived to inhabit rural areas of the Villarrica, Chile. Based on a semi-structured interview, the results show how mothers build an idyllic rural imaginary for child-rearing in the countryside landscape and how they negotiate the geographical, social and cultural limitations they face in rural territories when deploying their practices that materialize the child-rearing imaginary. It concludes by reflecting on the importance of generating educational and nurturing spaces that open processes of community construction in the territories that receive counterurbanization flows.
