La teoría del soft power eleva las cuestiones sociales y culturales al mismo nivel que las económicas y militares y, en el caso de ceremonias institucionales, está notablemente ligado al protocolo actual. Así, el presente artículo, una comparativa de las exequias de Isabel II de Reino Unido, Constantino II de Grecia y Benedicto XVI; hace hincapié en los factores del protocolo ligados al poder blando y estudia como ambas herramientas van de la mano en funerales de quienes eran, o habían sido, jefes de Estado. De este modo, de las singularidades de sus estatus y cargos ocupados emergen las peculiaridades y, con ellas, la posibilidad de leer tanto las ceremonias como su protocolo en clave política.

The theory of soft power raises social and cultural issues to the level of the economic and military ones. Therefore, in the case of institutional ceremonies, soft power is connected to the current protocol. Thus, this article, a comparative analysis of the funerals of Queen Elizabeth II, Benedict XVI and Constantine II of Greece, highlights the elements of today’s protocol linked to soft power and studies how both tools go hand in hand in funerals of who were or had been heads of State. Owing to their differences, singularities emerge and, with them, the possibility of analyzing them from a political perspective.
