Los capiteles y canecillos de las iglesias románicas se decoran con un amplio repertorio de animales reales y fantásticos o monstruos; los cuales no son sólo decoración sino que guardan un rico significado para enseñar al fiel; es lo que se conoce como bestiario. El presente artículo estudiara el bestiario de una zona concreta, el arciprestazgo del Umia, con la finalidad de identificar los animales representados y su posible simbología. El modelo escultórico que seguirán será el del maestro Mateo por pertenecer a la diócesis de Santiago, además de situarse en las inmediaciones del Camino de Santiago Portugués.

The capitals and corbels of the Romanesque churches are decorated with a wide repertoire of real and fantastic or monsters; which are not only decoration but have a rich meaning to teach the faithful; it is what is known as bestiary. This article will study the bestiary of a specific territory, the archpriesthood of the Umia, in order to identify the animals represented and their possible symbology. The sculptural model that they will follow will be that of Master Mateo for belonging to the diocese of Santiago,in addition to being located nearby on the Way to Portuguese Santiago.
