THE 2024 EUROPEAN PARLIAMENT ELECTIONS. CHALLENGES POSED BY THE ELECTORAL PARTICIPATION OF ITALIANS RESIDENT ABROAD AND EU CITIZENS LIVING IN ITALY Apart from those in 2019, the overall turnout at past European Parliament elections has continuously decreased. The risk this negative trend will continue to be registered also in 2024 is extremely high. This would undermine the credibility of the EP and negatively impact on the needed balance of power in the EU decision-making system. Among the categories of voters with a very low participation rate in the EP elections are the 14 million EU citizens living in a Member State other than that of nationality. This contribution will focus precisely on this group of voters in a specific EU member State, namely Italy. The possible reasons of such scarce participation will be examined and several measures that could be adopted in the country at stake to increase their participation to the forthcoming 2024 elections of the European Parliament will be put forward.
