Notwithstanding the immense diversity in both China and Africa, the prevailing image of China-Africa interface has continued to be a binary one, in which China has been portrayed as either an altruistic development partner or a neocolonial power. As an effort to bring more complexity and nuance to the ongoing discussions, this chapter investigates Chinese investment in Africa from an empirical perspective. It reviews the trends of such investment, the political economy underlying these trends, and the regulatory challenges faced by domestic and international regulators.
