Although the figures both for teaching and research staff and for students in the biosciences tend to give the impression of relatively little inequality with respect to the female gender, hidden biases persist which are probably deeply rooted in our culture, revealing the existence of gender blindness in our field as well. Thus, even under a simple analysis, concepts such as the “glass ceiling” or the “leaky pipeline” can be quickly identified in academic bioscience careers. Even among female students, who form a young collective fully trained in gender concepts, a bias is detected when assigning the characteristics of a “good teacher” to male figures more often than to female ones. It is time to reconsider, at all levels (teaching and research staff, group and project leaders, students), the gender stereotypes that we are still dragging along and that need to be changed in order to put an end to this implicit gender blindness.
