Resumen
: In recent decades, the concept of “Artificial Intelligence (AI) in Education” has been differentiated, depending on the discipline in which it is applied and developed (e.g. mathematics, chemistry, linguistics, teaching and learning). Motivated to understand the correlation between educationand AI, in terms of knowledge representation, reasoning and learning, the first research projects inthe field of Artificial Intelligence in Education (AIED) started already at the beginning of 1970s. Theintroduction of the application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in real-time and distance education hasbrought about capabilities such as automatic grading, personalized learning, and digital tutors. Indistance education in particular, it has bridged the gap between the learner and the instructor, incentivizing more frequent interaction and an appetite for learning, as he always has an assistant availableon his computer screen. This article attempts to describe the field of artificial intelligence applicationsin distance education. Developments in technology and in particular in computer systems combinedwith the appearance of various communication and interaction applications, have found fertile groundin distance education. Its evolutionary path is marked by the enrichment of new applications and technologies such as AI. Its applications can work in a complementary and non-competitive manner withthe educational community. In short, it aims to explore the options that AI offers in distance educationand how it can creatively influence the cooperation between them
